Perhaps you are new to the term, “The microbiome.” If so, I’m here to help. As THE microbiome expert, I’ve been at the tip of the spear in this industry for years. As the head of medical education for a microbiome firm, and now with my own platform, I’m here to educate you on what exactly this term means and how properly caring for it can improve your health.
I’ve been a science guy for many years. But now with the launch of my platform, my social media guy tells me I have to create content, and to do that I should view the content of others. Now I’m here to tell you that in the professional space, there’s a lack of understanding about the microbiome. And now having viewed the content in the commercial space, the stuff that you’re exposed to, I realize the challenges you have in trying to decide who to believe.
When I use the term “microbiome”, I am referring to the microbiome of the human gastrointestinal tract, unless otherwise specified. However, you should be aware that every part of you contains a microbiome. The microbiome can change dramatically for the better or worse, and is composed of a number of players. The biggest determinant is the bacteria, but you also have other microbes such as fungi, archaea and so forth. But we will be focused on the bacteria. Once you control them, you control the environment.
The human gut microbiome is established at birth, ideally via a vaginal delivery and with breastfeeding. However, as we go through life it takes a number of hits. The two largest determinants of the adult microbiome are diet and exposure to antibiotics. Now each one of us has a unique microbiome. This number varies quite a bit, but for now, we’ll just say that on average, each one of us has about 1,500 different species of bacteria in our gut. But we all don’t have the same species, and not all in the same proportions. They will depend on your lifetime exposures and genes.
The amount of bacteria in your gut actually outnumber the count of cells in your body. So in fact, you have a whole other alien ecosystem living within you, with a DNA content that far outweighs yours. You need to live in harmony with this internal ecosystem. But sadly many of the decisions we make, namely the many things we ingest, upset the harmony of the ecosystem itself, as well as its relationship with you.
Often times patients feel, that not only their gut symptoms, but all of their symptoms, must be attributed to something particularly nasty. It must be some nefarious parasite, pathogenic bacteria or some deadly virus. Although these are possibilities, the vast majority of the time, the cause is something called dysbiosis. Dysbiosis is when the balance of power in your microbiome has shifted from one that is health-promoting, to one that is driven by what are called opportunistic pathogens. When they are in charge, they begin and continue a process of inflammation, which can have ramifications not only in your gut, but in every aspect of your health. When thinking about the microbiome, the first conditions that come to mind are conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Of course, these are conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, and are obvious. What’s less obvious are others, like autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular disease, depression, anxiety and many more. The average person doesn’t think of these being linked to gut health, but they are.
